Anton Pieck is the best-known Dutch illustrator of the twentieth century. The past, especially the 19th century, inspired Anton Pieck. He developed his own unique style, which spoke to millions of people all over the world.
Romantic irony and comic scenes seemed to suit Pieck perfectly. He was an inexhaustible source of ideas and had an eye for detail and nuances. His etchings, engravings, dry needles, wood engravings and lithographs drew the attention of art connoisseurs and fellow artists. However, Pieck’s drawings for fantasy-themed amusement park ‘the Efteling’, his Christmas cards (“the winter, with its ice and snow, has my preference”), and his detailed calendar images are what gained him public fame.
